Meet Arlan, Violinist
I aim to highlight the most creative, surprising, and important musical voices of the present, while continually seeking to reframe and reexamine the works of the musical past.
As a new music specialist, I have performed and premiered countless contemporary works at concerts and festivals across North America and Europe; recent highlights include performances of the Ruth Crawford Seeger String Quartet 1941 (Confluence Concerts, Toronto), Steve Reich’s Music for 18 (UToronto Percussion Ensemble), Schnittke’s Sonata for Violin and Orchestra (Newfound Music Festival), and multiple guest artist appearances for New Music Edmonton and others.
As a baroque violinist, I pursue a creative and vital fusion of academic research and practical performance. My ongoing doctoral research at the University of Toronto, supplemented by time as a Visiting Research Student at Cambridge University, examines the unaccompanied violin sonatas of the Bach associate Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (1739 - 1796), seeking new performance practice information to refine the historically informed performance of music by Bach, Rust, and their colleagues.
As a symphony violinist, I have held tenures as concertmaster of Opera on the Avalon and associate concertmaster of the Newfoundland Symphony.
Over the course of my career, I have been fortunate to receive project grants, scholarships, and awards, including some highlights such as: the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award; the SSHRC CGS-D, Michael Smith Travel Supplement, and CGS-M; the Sir James Lougheed Award of Distinction; grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the arts councils of Ontario, Newfoundland, and Alberta; and the William H. Scheide Research Grant from the American Bach Society.
